Real advantages

Exclusive Advantages of a New York Medical Cannabis Card

A medical card gives you patient-only benefits that recreational buyers do not get. Here is what you can expect as a certified New York patient:

Tax Savings

Medical patients pay a 3.15% excise tax. Recreational buyers pay 13% at the register. That is a savings of about 9.85% on every purchase.

Home Cultivation Rights

Legally cultivate up to six cannabis plants (3 mature, 3 immature) for personal medical use, in accordance with OCM regulations.

Higher Purchase Limit

Your certifying provider sets the amount based on your needs, and you're allowed to keep a 60-day supply at any time — well beyond a recreational customer's limits.

Legal Protection

Enjoy peace of mind knowing you are fully compliant with New York cannabis laws and OCM guidelines.

Minor Access

Patients under 18 may access medical cannabis through a registered caregiver age 21 or older when they have a qualifying condition.

Employment Protection

Certified patients get workplace protection against discrimination for legal medical cannabis use, plus housing protections recreational users do not have.

Do You Qualify for a Medical Marijuana Card in New York?

New York scrapped its fixed list of qualifying conditions back in 2022. Today, a licensed New York physician can recommend cannabis for any condition they reasonably believe it will help — chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, nausea, and plenty more. The bar to walk in the door is simple: be a New York resident who's 18 or older. Under 18? A designated caregiver can apply on your behalf.

Questions

New York Medical Marijuana Card: Common Questions (2026)

Your guide to the most common questions about the New York medical marijuana card.

If recreational is already legal, why get a medical card?

Legal and affordable aren't the same thing. Adult-use buyers pay a 13% retail excise. Medical cannabis carries a 3.15% excise instead, most dispensaries add patient-only discounts on top, and you get legal protections around work and housing that recreational use doesn't cover. Add patient-only discounts and protections, and the card earns its keep quickly for anyone who uses cannabis regularly.

How fast will I actually be approved?

Most patients are certified within about 15 minutes of starting the video visit. Sign up, meet your doctor, and you can be at a dispensary the same day.

What if the doctor doesn't certify me?

You get a full refund, and you don't have to chase it — it's automatic. With New York's condition list gone since 2022, the threshold is flexible and the large majority of applicants qualify. On the rare occasion someone doesn't, we honor the guarantee, no debate.

How long is my New York medical marijuana certification valid?

One year. Your certification is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued. You can renew it online before it expires, and we will remind you when it is time.

Does my NY card work in other states — and do out-of-state patients get served here?

Two different questions. Your certification is issued under New York law, so whether another state honors it depends entirely on that state's reciprocity rules — always check before you travel. Going the other way, New York's 2025 update added reciprocity for visiting patients, so an out-of-state medical patient can now buy at New York's licensed medical dispensaries.

How do I know a dispensary is actually licensed?

Every OCM-licensed shop posts an official verification (often a QR code) tied to its state registration, and you can confirm any location on the Office of Cannabis Management's website before you go. If a store can't show you that, walk out — unlicensed sellers are still common.

Will a past felony disqualify me?

No. A criminal record has no bearing on your eligibility for a medical cannabis certification in New York. The program looks at medical need, not your history.

Will insurance cover the cost?

Plan on paying out of pocket. Because cannabis is still federally restricted, health insurance generally won't pay for the products themselves, and our certification fee isn't billable to insurance. The federal government did move state-licensed medical cannabis to a lower drug schedule in April 2026, which may reshape coverage over time — but for now, budget for the visit and the product directly.

How do I get a medical marijuana card in New York?

Book an online evaluation with a New York–licensed practitioner. If you qualify, they issue an electronic medical cannabis certification with your registry ID number. That certification, together with a government-issued ID, works as your medical marijuana card in New York at any licensed dispensary.

Who qualifies for a medical marijuana card in New York?

Any New York resident 18 or older can qualify. Since 2022, there is no fixed condition list — a licensed physician can recommend cannabis for any condition they believe it will help, including chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, and nausea. Patients under 18 apply through a designated caregiver.

How much does a medical marijuana card cost in New York?

Our evaluation is $149 for a new medical marijuana card in New York and $99 for a renewal, and code NSAVE10 takes 10% off. The state registration itself is free — we handle it for you — and you only pay if a licensed doctor approves you.

Can I get a medical marijuana card in New York online?

Yes. The entire process is 100% online. You meet a New York–licensed doctor by secure, HIPAA-compliant video, and if approved, your certification is emailed to you the same day. No office visit is required.

Does New York still issue physical medical marijuana cards?

No. New York replaced physical cards with electronic certifications. Your emailed certification includes your registry ID number, and showing it with a state ID at any licensed dispensary works exactly like the old plastic medical marijuana card.

Can I use my New York medical marijuana card at any dispensary?

Yes — your certification is valid at every OCM-licensed dispensary in New York State, more than 300 locations. Just bring your certification and a government-issued ID. It does not work at unlicensed shops, which you should avoid anyway.

Does New York accept out-of-state medical marijuana cards?

Yes. Under New York's November 2025 update, visiting patients with a valid medical marijuana card from another state can buy at New York's licensed medical dispensaries. Going the other way, whether your New York card works elsewhere depends on that state's reciprocity rules — check before you travel.

Can I own a gun with a New York medical marijuana card?

This is a real conflict in the law. New York does not take away gun rights for medical cannabis patients, but federal law still prohibits buying a firearm while using cannabis — the ATF purchase form asks about it directly, and answering falsely is a federal offense. If firearm ownership matters to you, talk to an attorney before applying.

Will a medical marijuana card in New York affect my job?

New York law protects certified patients from discrimination for legal, off-duty medical cannabis use. Exceptions exist: federal employees, safety-sensitive roles, and jobs governed by federal rules (like commercial driving) can still restrict use. When in doubt, check your workplace policy.

How do I renew my medical marijuana card in New York?

Renew online before your current certification expires: book a $99 renewal visit, meet your doctor by video, and your updated certification is emailed the same day. We send reminders so your medical marijuana card in New York never lapses.
