As a general law, the patient must be 18 years or older to independently apply for a New York medical marijuana card.
Patients who are not yet 18 will be considered minors and are eligible to apply for a medical marijuana certification as long as they are accompanied by a designated caregiver.
Caregivers must be 21 years or older and have been designated by a registered patient. They are also required to submit proof of their identity and residence within the state of New York.
You’ll need to provide the following to apply for a New York medical marijuana card:
Your doctor will be submitting your medical marijuana recommendation directly to the state on your behalf. As soon as the document is approved, you’ll receive your medical marijuana certificate through us.
You also need to provide proof of your identity such as a copy of your NY driver’s license, NY state ID, or NY photo ID.
The state also requires you to submit proof of your residence within the state of New York such as a copy of your utility bills, property taxes, mortgage agreement, medical bills, or voter registration card, etc.
As soon as your medical marijuana recommendation is approved by your doctor, they will directly upload a copy of your recommendation to the New York medical marijuana program website on your behalf. As the state doesn’t issue plastic IDs anymore, you’ll receive a copy of your medical marijuana certificate from us as soon as the state accepts your application. Now, you can use this certificate to purchase medical cannabis from state-licensed dispensaries.
According to the updated state regulations, the process of applying for a card renewal is similar to that of applying for a medical marijuana card for the very first time. However, if your card was issued prior to March 20, 2023, you’ll still need to register yourself with the state for card renewal.
To apply as a designated medical cannabis caregiver, you must be 21 or older and have been nominated by a registered patient as a designated caregiver. The patient must designate the caregiver through their personal my.ny.gov account before the caregivers can register themselves with the MCDMS. An individual can act as a designated caregiver for up to 4 patients.
Unfortunately, the state of New York doesn’t offer medical marijuana reciprocity to medical marijuana card holders from other US states. However, individuals who are 21 or older can purchase recreational cannabis within the state.
